Who attends your ISO9001-2008 Management Review?

Who should attend your ISO9001-2008 management review? Have you had a management review yet? Did you have a meeting with a bunch of bored people sitting around looking at their phones? Or was it a concise, structured look at how well your organization is improving?

I’ve participated in both kinds of management review. Some companies feel the need to have a big annual meeting, bringing in heads of departments to discuss status of the quality management system. And if you want to do that, it’s perfectly fine. But please don’t think that this is the way it has to be.

Section 5.6 of the standard simply says that top management must review the organizations quality management system periodically. It’s up to you to decide who is your top management. If you’re the owner of a small company and you want to sit down with yourself and bang out your management review all by your lonesome self, by all means please proceed. As long as you cover the required inputs and outputs, and keep appropriate records of your work, you’ve covered the ISO9001-2008 requirement for management review.
